Meet the Psychosocial Team

At Pediatric Specialists of Virginia (PSV), we understand that a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming for both children and their families. Our dedicated Psychosocial Team is here to provide emotional and practical support throughout your child’s treatment journey. From counseling and coping strategies to assistance with financial and logistical challenges, our services are designed to help families navigate the complexities of cancer care. We encourage you to take advantage of PSV’s free and accessible Psychosocial services to ensure that you and your child receive the comprehensive support you need.

How Our Psychosocial Team Supports Your Family

Our Psychosocial Team provides comprehensive support to patients and families throughout their treatment journey.

  • Art Therapist (ATR): Engages patients, siblings (when applicable), and caregivers in therapeutic art and play activities during infusion appointments. These activities encourage emotional expression, peer interaction, alternative focus, and creative coping strategies.
  • Child Life Specialist (CCLS): Helps reduce stress and promote coping for patients and families during clinic visits. Support includes procedural preparation (e.g., port access, blood draws), age-appropriate health education, and normalization activities.
  • Education Navigator (M.Ed): Guides families in developing the best education plan for their child during and after treatment. Assistance includes enrolling in Homebound services, finding a tutor, attending school meetings, and discussing 504/IEP accommodations.
  • Social Worker/Case Manager (MSW): Connects patients and families with resources and strategies to address financial, practical, and employment-related needs. Support includes assistance with FMLA, financial aid applications, and access to community resources.
  • Pediatric Oncology Therapists (LCSW): Licensed clinical social workers who provide emotional and therapeutic support for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Services include individual and group therapy, parent support, behavioral management, and emotional and social well-being resources.

Our team is dedicated to ensuring that every child and family receives the support they need, both in and out of the medical setting.
