PRESS RELEASE

Release Date: June 02, 2017

Fairfax, VA – Pediatric Specialists of Virginia (PSV) is proud to announce that its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Leon E. Moores, MD (Neurosurgery), is the featured star in the newly released collaborative book effort between the Tell Me Town Foundation and Pediatric Specialists of Virginia (PSV) entitled: A Family Learns About Deployment.

The book, written by Cindy Chambers, President and Founder of The Tell Me Town Foundation, and illustrated by Jim Huber, is now published and available for purchase through BarnesandNoble.com(link is external), Amazon.com(link is external), and through other on-line book sellers.

In the story Dr. Moores, a retired United States Army Colonel, is cast as Colonel Dr. Smores who teams up with Beamer, a therapy dog who is the star of Tell Me Town’s Beamer Book Series and Tell Me Town Books, to help children and their families better understand the military deployment process and emotional impact it has on all family members involved.

“This was such a great opportunity to partner with Tell Me Town and the terrific students at Harper Park Middle School [Leesburg, VA],” Dr. Moores said.  “The idea of telling the story of deployment in a way that can help young children understand and prepare for a parent leaving to go into harm’s way was so rewarding and now, thanks to Cindy and Jim, a reality.”

The idea to make A Family Learns About Deployment came about via request by Harper Park Middle School students in Leesburg, VA.  The students of Mrs. Duhring’s 8th grade class decided that a book on deployment would be helpful to children and families everywhere.

Because of his outstanding military background, Dr. Moores was selected by Tell Me Town, to be the star of the book.  He came to the school to educate the students and then collaborated with the author and the students to create this very special story.  The students enjoyed spending time with Dr. Moores and the author found his insight and experience to be of great benefit throughout the writing of the story.

In addition, PSV’s Dr. Rupa Dainer, MD (PSV Chief Strategy Officer & Anesthesiologist) was also asked to present her experience to the students as a mom who was deployed and had to leave children during that deployment.  The students appreciated hearing her perspective as a mom missing her children while she was away.

After learning more about deployment, selected students created a poem while others in the class created the associated illustrations for the poem.  This was added to the book.  It was their way of conveying their feelings.

A Family Learns About Deployment is another great collaboration between The Tell Me Town Foundation and PSV.  We are looking forward to A Family Learns About Deployment, which has been endorsed by several highly respected military professionals, bringing comfort to children and their families for years to come.

On Wednesday, June 7 at 9:00 am, Dr. Moores will be receiving the “Tell Me Town Military Deployment Education Award” at Harper Park Middle School for his outstanding work on this book. The 8th grade students of Mrs. Duhring’s class and Mrs. Duhring will be recognized by Tell Me Town, for working on the book and the school will receive an education award as well.
