Dr. Thomas C. Newton is the Medical Director of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) at Pediatric Specialists of Virginia (PSV). He is a board-certified pediatric hematologist/oncologist with a focus on adolescent and young adult cancer, leukemia/lymphoma, and cancer survivorship and healthcare transitions. Dr. Newton served 25 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Colonel in 2020.
He earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at Wilford Hall United States Air Force Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Dr. Newton’s passion for pediatric hematology/oncology began during his medical school years, when he volunteered for the Kids in Chemotherapy Support program, forming a deep connection with a young patient named Ben, who had medulloblastoma. His career has been shaped by his dedication to patient care and advocacy, and he has earned numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Hope Award from the Ulman Cancer Fund, and has been recognized as a Top Doctor by Arlington Magazine, Northern Virginia Magazine, and Washingtonian.
Having practiced in the Washington, DC area since 2010, Dr. Newton enjoys the culture, restaurants, and outdoor activities that the region offers. Outside of his clinical work, he is committed to staying physically active, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Dr. Newton also volunteers with the American Academy of Pediatrics, where he has held various leadership roles.
A dedicated provider, Dr. Newton’s proudest moments include reconnecting with former patients who have gone on to pursue careers in healthcare. If he weren’t a doctor, he would likely be a teacher, as he enjoys personal interactions and sharing his knowledge with others.
